HOUSTON – An explosion and fire Monday at the Houston Federation of Teachers’ building near the Gulfgate neighborhood resulted in a partial collapse of the building. “It’s pretty much a wreck inside,” said Andy Dewey, executive vice president, Houston Federation of Teachers. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Dewey said it appears to have been a gas explosion. Dewey said a technician was called to the building Monday morning to turn on the gas in order to heat the building. While no one was inside the teacher’s union at the time of the fire, Dewey told KPRC 2 he had left for the day roughly 30 to 45 minutes before the explosion.

HOUSTON – Hundreds of Houston Independent School District teachers have been laid off, but now the district is hiring hundreds more. The president of the Houston Federation of Teachers, Gayle Fallon, said she is infuriated that the district said the laid-off teachers have first priority to the nearly 300 teacher position openings. The district said laid-off teachers teachers will be considered first and that it has held job fairs in recent weeks to connect the displaced teachers with the principals of the schools with openings. School district officials said 724 teachers have been laid off because of budget cuts. Of those teachers, some have decided to retire or take a job with another school district and some have decided to appeal their layoff.
