HOUSTON – Firefighters were battling a large fire Monday at an apartment in the Gulfton neighborhood in southwest Houston. The fire was reported around 2 p.m. at the Pelican Pointe Apartments, where smoke billowed into the air until around 5 p.m.Houston firefighters said they reported to a call of an apartment fire. They said the fourth alarm was called after the roof of the apartment partially collapsed, trapping one firefighter. Officials warned other residents to be cautious with the current weather conditions. That is a very dangerous way to heat your home, especially concerns for carbon monoxide,” Mire warned.

The clinic has been working hard since the start of the pandemic and now they’re faced with a difficult roadblock. She said she can’t understand why the Department of State Health Services has not provided them with the vaccine after she says they were approved many weeks ago. Farizani said the community needs the vaccine to protect themselves and their families from the deadly virus.

Two firefighters were injured Saturday morning while battling an apartment fire in Houston’s Gulfton neighborhood, officials said. The fire was first reported around 2:30 a.m. Saturday at an apartment complex in the 5700 block of Glenmont Drive, near Alder Drive. Two firefighters were injured while searching for civilians in the building, Wells said. “It was covered in smoke,” Wells said. Everybody worked really really really hard.

Demonstrators rallied against evictions Friday outside of a Harris County justice of the peace precinct in Houston. The two justices of the peace for Harris Precinct 5, unlike some of their counterparts elsewhere in the county, resumed eviction proceedings as soon as they were allowed, in mid-May. In Houston, the first round of a rental assistance program ran out in 90 minutes, according to the Houston Chronicle. Although both judges are hearing eviction cases, protesters said that Ridgways court has more evictions scheduled and handles cases for immigrant neighborhoods like Gulfton. According to January Advisors, the precinct also had the most evictions compared with other parts of the county before the pandemic.

Many Gulfton residents are struggling to make ends meet, but the community is looking at ways to curb this disparity. The Gulfton neighborhood is made up of mostly minorities with the latest demographic data revealing 69% of residents are Hispanic. But for Gulfton residents like Guillermina, she isnt so sure. In our series Stronger Houston, we examine issues impacting people inequitably by race, gender, income, age, geography, religion, and other factors.
