But some wrongly believed carp threatened native species, and the commission was abolished four years later, according to Aaron Reed’s book, Fly Fishing Austin & Central Texas. Today non-native common carp are ubiquitous in lakes and rivers across the state, and carp fishing has grown in popularity. Both Fairchild and Fenner, who works as a fishing guide, practice what’s called Euro-style carp fishing. One hot spot is the Galveston Fishing Pier, located at 9001 Seawall Blvd. However, the pier did suffer extensive damage caused by Hurricane Ike in 2008 and was shut down for a time. It’s open 24 hours a day which makes it an ideal place to fish. You don’t have to be an experienced fisherman either, those new to fishing are welcome, including kids. Recently, KPRC 2 photojournalists Alex Radow and Allen Reid spent a day the pier to capture some of the sights and sounds.

A long-lost cell phone is back with its owner after spending nearly a year at the bottom of Maryland's Severn River. The phone, inside a waterproof case, was 6-year-old Reagan Votaw's first catch during a recent fishing outing. The family took the phone home, cut it out of its now clam-encrusted case and worked to dry it out. That owner turned out to be 8th grader Preston Shapiro, who lost the phone while kayaking with a friend. “What surprised me most was that i had no idea that this thing was going to work,” he said after being reunited with the phone.

PURNIA, India – A man from northeastern India made the best choice to save an endangered dolphin after accidentally catching it with his fishing net, FOX News and India’s Southwest News Service reported. The incident occurred on July 3 at the Ganges River. The dolphin, later identified as a Ganges river dolphin, was listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and protected by the Indian Wildlife Act. When it became entangled by the fishing net, a massive crowd gathered at the area to get a glimpse of the mammal. Once the fisherman saw the dolphin, he carried the mammal safely and released it back into the water.

A 13-year-old boy made a massive catch on a recent offshore trip in Port Aransas. According to mySA.com, Micah Harless, of Weatherford, reeled in a tiger shark with the help of his father. Dolphin Docks Deep Sea Fishing, the charter boating company the teenager was on, shared the news on its Facebook page. The tiger shark was 11 feet, 6 inches long and weighed 844 pounds. An employee with Dolphin Docks Deep Sea Fishing told mySA.com the meat was split between approximately 14 people who were on the charter boat.

He came prepared with an 11-inch sucker because big bait attracts big fish, he said. Knight, of Meredith, New Hampshire, caught a lake trout last Tuesday that weighed in at 37.65 pounds, easily breaking the state record that was more than 60 years old. After catching the fish, he immediately packed it in an ice box with snow and called the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. "This fish is now the largest lake trout caught in all of New England," Schafermeyer said.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will stock 20,498 rainbow trout in the Canyon Tailrace over the course of eight weeks starting Dec. 6. The tentative dates for rainbow trout stocking along the tailrace are Dec. 6, 13, 20 and 27, as well as Jan. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. “Rainbow trout stockings begin around Thanksgiving in Bexar County and will continue through February,” a TPWD spokesperson told KSAT. Thousands of rainbow trout will also be stocked in four lakes around San Antonio this season, including Southside Lions and Miller’s Pond. A total of 343,650 rainbow trout will be stocked in lakes and ponds across Texas for the 2019-2020 trout stocking season, TPWD reported.
