ERCOT says power shortage possible Monday, seeks conservation
The state’s power regulator warned late Sunday night of a “reserve capacity shortage” on Monday afternoon that could lead to some outages, and asked the public for conservation. The critical time for conservation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., ERCOT said in a news release. “Conservation is a reliability tool ERCOT has deployed more than four dozen times since 2008 to successfully manage grid operations. This notification is issued when projected reserves may fall below 2300 MW for 30 minutes or more,” the release states. “ERCOT continues to use all tools available to manage the grid effectively and reliably, including using reserve power and calling upon large electric customers who have volunteered to lower their energy use,” the release added.myrgv.com

Analysis: Betting a Texas election on a weather forecast
Gov. Greg Abbott says he can "guarantee" there won't be blackouts this winter in Texas after one that knocked out power for some people for four days last February. That's the kind of pre-election prediction that can make a weather forecaster more useful than a political poll.
Texas grid vulnerable to blackouts during severe winter weather, even with new preparations, ERCOT estimates show
The most severe scenario considered by ERCOT for this winter — very high demand for power, extensive fossil fuel outages, and low renewable power production — does not capture the amount of power lost during February.
Looking for Power? Look up!
I had a quick conversation with my neighbor yesterday about solar panels as he is considering installing some on his roof. This is a pretty typical discussion when we have these long stretches of blue sky, especially after last February’s ERCOT disaster. We don’t talk much about putting in a wind turbine, yet coincidentally Climate Central sent down a fascinating look at just how much power both the sun and the wind can generate. I have graphics! Given today’s sunshine and what we are expecting over the weekend, here is how much power the good ole sun would generate:
Abbott Announces Six Appointees For Newly Formed Texas Energy Reliability Council
Austin, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott announced six appointees to the Texas Energy Reliability Council on Tuesday, September 28, setting in motion one of the state’s initiatives to resolve issues with the state power grid. The Texas Energy Reliability Council, which is separate from the similarly named Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), was established in June 2021 with the passing of Senate Bill 3, which is meant to weatherize the power grid to prevent calamities such as the power outages that occurred during Winter Storm Uri earlier this year. The appointees include two Houston-based veterans of the energy industry: Edward Stones and Melissa Trevino. Trevino is the Assistant Vice President for Power at Occidental Energy Ventures, where she leads the energy management team and oversees the power reporting and compliance group. More information on the appointees can be found in the press release from the Office of the Texas Governor.springhappenings.com

Governor Abbott Signs Senate Bills to Reform ERCOT and Improve Power Grid
Austin, Texas – Governor Gregg Abbott recently signed Senate Bills 2 and 3 which aim to reform ERCOT and improve the Texas power grid’s ability to hold up against extreme weather. “Under Senate Bills 2 and 3, Texas will now require the weatherization of power generation facilities, natural gas facilities, and transmission facilities to handle extreme weather,” the governor’s office said in a press release. Weatherization refers to the practice of improving a facility’s protection from the elements to ensure their safety and stability during extreme weather events. The bills will reform the leadership board of ERCOT, requiring that board members be residents of Texas and that 8 of the 11 members be independent of ERCOT. The bills will also implement an extreme weather notification system that will send alerts to every Texan’s cell phone.springhappenings.com

Texas legislative bill will require power generators to get major upgrades for extreme weather
The Texas Senate on Monday unanimously approved a sweeping bill that would overhaul the state’s electricity industry and infrastructure, including mandating that power plants prepare for extreme weather and outlawing risky indexed retail electric plans. “And we’re fixing the problems.”TRUTH HURTS: Texans really hate ERCOT after winter storm, UH survey confirmsSB 3 would require all power generators, transmission lines, natural gas facilities and pipelines to make upgrades for extreme weather — a process known as weatherization. Most power generators and gas facilities were not equipped to handle temperatures that dipped into single digits last month. The Senate bill reflects that concern, leaving it to the Texas Railroad Commission, the regulatory body that oversees the state’s oil and natural gas industry, to decide what upgrades natural gas fuel facilities would have to make. Known as TERC, the board coordinates state energy regulators, electricity generators and the natural gas fuel industry to ensure reliable gas distribution for electricity.chron.com

Texas’ Power Grid Was 4 Minutes And 37 Seconds Away From Collapsing. Here’s How It Happened – Houston Public Media
We've heard Texas' power grid came close to total failure early the morning of Feb. 15, but not exactly how close. Meanwhile, power plants across the state were going offline because of the cold weather; natural gas, coal, nuclear and wind energy sources were all failing. If there's not enough power on the grid to meet demand, ERCOT officials said, the frequency of the grid drops below that 60 hertz level. And it can force more power plants to shut down — possibly leading to a complete failure of the grid. If it had stayed below that threshold for another 4 minutes and 37 seconds, the lights might still be out in Texas, ERCOT officials said.houstonpublicmedia.org

Fletcher Demands Investigation Into ERCOT Following Mass Power Outages – Houston Public Media
Houston Public Media spoke with Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher, a Democrat who represents West Houston and western Harris County, to get her take on how to respond. Well, I think the federal government is responding to the emergency as quickly as it can. Having been notified by the state of Texas, President Biden declared the federal emergency over the weekend before it happened. But we know that so many people who are out of their homes need those blankets, need the generators, need the things that FEMA is providing. But then also we need a full investigation, and we need to understand what's happened and why.houstonpublicmedia.org
Across Texas, Extreme Cold Brings Rolling Blackouts, Traffic Accidents And Business Closures – Houston Public Media
Much of the state is experiencing extreme cold temperatures, and many areas have multiple inches of snow on the ground. Texas Standard spoke with reporters from public radio stations around the state to learn how Texans are coping with the extreme winter weather. Joey Palacios, a reporter at Texas Public Radio in San Antonio, said power blackouts in the city began around the time snow stopped falling, at 2 a.m. Monday morning. The amount of stress on the power grid around the state caused blackouts to be longer than energy providers had initially told customers they would be.
