HOUSTON – Hundreds gathered at Discovery Green Saturday to denounce Asian hate and mourn the eight people lost in Atlanta’s spa shootings earlier this week. The vigil was put on by the OCA-Greater Houston, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well being Asian Pacific Americans. In the crowd, there were signs of love and others asking for the end to Asian hate. According to the OCA-Greater Houston, there have been 3,800 local hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders since March of 2020. AdSix of the eight victims were of Asian descent, despite that though the shooter claims the shooting was not racially motivated.

The Houston community is made better by his unwavering spirit and commitment. Driven to increase awareness and acceptance of the neurodiverse population at every societal level, Russo is deeply involved in the Houston community from the workplace to broader social activities. HOUSTON – H-Town is doing it big this weekend with several events for families to enjoy! Ice skating at Discovery GreenThe Ice Rink powered by Green Mountain Energy opened at 5 p.m. on Friday the 13th at Discovery Green Park. If you are coming with someone who is skating, you won’t be allowed in the ice rink area unless you’re with a child younger than 10 years old. This year’s zoo lights run from Nov. 14 to January 10, 2021. People already got a sneak peek at Zoo Lights earlier this week.

Discovery Green’s ice rink will open on November 13 and run through the end of January. The ice rink capacity has been restricted to 50 percent capacity to allow for social distancing. A number of changes in the venue have been made to allow for social distancing while changing shoes and skates. Ice rink staff procedures have been revised to allow for social distancing and monitoring. The ice rink is located in Discovery Green at 1500 McKinney St. in downtown Houston.

HOUSTON – Hundreds of people marched from Discovery Green to Houston’s city hall in honor of 20-year-old Vanessa Guillen. The Houston native, who was missing since April, is believed to have been bludgeoned to death on the Fort Hood army base in Kileen. Lupe Guillen, Vanessa’s sister, choked back tears as she addressed the large crowd. Other protesters, like Yvette Villegas, were at the event demanding those responsible for Guillen’s death be held accountable. “I don’t think any woman or anybody should have to go through this whether she’s in uniform or not,” Villegas said.

HOUSTON – People marched for several hours through downtown Houston Tuesday in protest of the death of George Floyd, who died while being detained by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Police said they were willing to remain at the scene all night as long as the protest remained peaceful. HOUSTON – Hundreds of people attended a Black Lives Matter protest in downtown demanding justice for Houston-native George Floyd, who was killed after an officer kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes. Throughout the march, protestors chanted: “Hands up, don’t shoot," “I can’t breathe,” and “No justice. HOUSTON – Voices from the Houston Grand Opera Chorus, the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church Chapel Choir and AFA Girls Chorus will perform holiday music and sing-alongs at a free Discovery Green event in December. The Carols on the Green: Celebrating the Season in Song event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 7 to 8 p.m.Blankets, lawn chairs and picnics are welcome; food, beer and wine are available for purchase on site from The Lake House, which is offering seasonal beverage for the whole family, including rich hot chocolate with whipped cream ($3) and mulled wine, featuring a California red simmered with cloves, cinnamon and star anise ($5).
