It’s officially Clear the Shelters month, and that means it’s time to open your heart - and maybe your home - to a pet in need. For the 11th year, shelters across the Houston area are teaming up with KPRC 2 and our community partners at Energy Transfer and Houston Christian University to help every dog, cat, bunny, and guinea pig find the loving family they deserve.

KPRC 2 is proud to once again join NBC and Telemundo's Clear the Shelters initiative and team up with animal shelters and rescue groups in the greater Houston area to host the eleventh annual Clear the Shelters nationwide pet adoption drive.

Stray pets and overcrowded shelters are a persistent concern around Houston. Organizations are teaming up to provide solutions to help alleviate the problem.

Fort Bend County Judge KP George joined Fort Bend County Animal Services on Thursday for the start of its Doggy Dash, Kitty Kab, and Curbside Pickup programs aimed at finding homes for as many adoption-ready dogs and cats as possible due to the shelter’s overcrowded conditions.

The results are in from the national Clear the Shelters campaign and 2021 marked an increase from 2020 for pets finding loving, fur-ever homes and owners.

In honor of “Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week” we’re shining a spotlight on a local teen who’s spreading awareness for heartworm-positive dogs. While volunteering with the Houston Humane Society Riley Burwell noticed some pups were often getting passed over due to their condition. Through some creative fundraising, Burwell found a way to help sponsor their treatment and find them forever homes.

They always say “adopt, don’t shop,” and that couldn’t be more true during this Clear the Shelters event.
