Protesters mobilized by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police have called for the removal of statues of Columbus, Confederate figures and others. They say the Italian explorer is responsible for the genocide and exploitation of native peoples in the Americas. According to The Baltimore Sun, the statue was owned by the city and dedicated in 1984 by former Mayor William Donald Schaefer and President Ronald Reagan. Statues of Columbus have also been toppled or vandalized in cities such as Miami; Richmond, Virginia; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Boston, where one was decapitated.

HOUSTON A statue of Christopher Columbus was removed from Houston a park Friday -- the latest Houston statue taken down in response to public outcry and ongoing protests over racial inequality. The statue, which had stood in Bell Park just outside the Museum District since 1992, was vandalized three times in a week. The statue was once again covered in red paint this week. A fence was placed around the statue and a city park employee watched over it overnight before it was removed from the park Friday morning. Earlier this week, two other Houston statues were removed from public display, the statue of Confederate commander Robert Dick Dowling, formerly located in Hermann Park, and a statue called the Spirit of the Confederacy, formerly located in Sam Houston Park.

Police told KPRC 2 they received a call at around 1 a.m. that someone wearing all black threw red paint on the statue. This same Christopher Columbus statue was vandalized twice last week.

But for several years, historians have dug deeper into his violent past and the way he treated Indigenous people. He had also enacted policies of forced labor in which Indigenous people were forced to work for the profit of European colonizers. Today, many cities and states in the U.S. have dropped celebrations of Columbus Day in October and instead celebrate “Indigenous Peoples Day” to stand in solidarity with Native Americans.

The seven-foot bronze statue was donated to the city in 1992 by the Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Greater Houston. Red paint was also used to vandalize the statue in 2017.

RICHMOND, Virginia A crowd of protesters in Richmond, Virginia, brought down the statue of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, CNN affiliate WRIC reported. But protesters vandalized a statue of Christopher Columbus, tore it down using ropes and threw it in the park. Ahead of the rally, the Richmond Indigenous Society tweeted "we are gathering at Byrd Park to protest yet another racist monument. Christopher Columbus was a murderer of Indigenous people, mainstreaming the genocidal culture against Indigenous people that we still see today. The state's governor has also announced plans to remove another statue honoring Confederate General Robert R. Lee from Richmond's historic Monument Avenue.
