Edinburg man accused of fatal 2021 Christmas crash set for bond reduction hearing
An Edinburg man held on $800,000 in bonds is asking for a bond reduction after being accused of killing a woman in a wrong-way crash on Christmas in 2021. Edinburg police charged Otis Charles Barron, 30, with intoxicated manslaughter, accident involving death, two counts of intoxicated assault with vehicle and two counts of accident involving serious bodily injury. The probable cause affidavit states that Barron left his vehicle at the scene and proceeded to travel on foot to a hospital to get medical attention. In addition, Barron allegedly confessed to police to being the driver and leaving the scene of the crash. Barron is set to appear before state District Judge Keno Vasquez Tuesday morning for the hearing.myrgv.com

Floods in Philippines leave 51 dead, over a dozen missing
The death toll in the massive floods that devastated parts of the Philippines over the Christmas weekend has climbed to 51, with 19 others missing, the national disaster response agency said Monday, as affected residents struggle to get back on their feet. Photos on social media showed residents in Misamis Occidental province in Northern Mindanao sweeping away thick mud from the floors of their homes. Rio Grande Valley citrus growers, already dealing with lingering drought and still recovering from the devastating February 2021 freeze, dreaded what forecasters said was headed this way in the days leading up to Christmas. Firefighters on Santa’s nice list after rescuing child’s Christmas toy from drainage system
Hours after Santa delivered a shiny new remote-control car to a Houston-area family, the miniature motorized vehicle was nearly lost on its maiden voyage. The Willowfork Fire Department in Katy, Fort Bend County posted photos from the rescue Sunday afternoon on Facebook. The pictures show firefighters lowering a ladder into a drain and then a first responder crawling down to save the newly treasured toy.
