The Houston Fire Department was called just before 5:30 a.m. for an apartment complex on fire, and a mayday call was initiated after 3 firefighters were hurt.

More than 100 firefighters were called to assist, and at one point—a mayday was called when a firefighter was separated from his company.

The fire is getting smaller (slowly) but streets are still closed and some families are still out of their homes.

HOUSTON – Firefighters are investigating a blaze that left one person dead at a group home for people with special needs in southwest Houston Tuesday morning. William Habermas lives at the group home. He tried to get all the residents to safety and grabbed a fire extinguisher to fight the flames. “I tried to push it away with a fire extinguisher, but it wouldn’t go away,” Habermas said. Officials say the owner of the home is moving the displaced residents to another group home nearby.
