HOUSTON โ€“ Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo and Greater Houston Police Activities League (GHPAL) officers held a news conference to announce a new partnership with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. According to the news release, the new program will be called โ€œBigs in Blueโ€ and is being done for National Mentor Month. The Greater Houston Police Activities League said they are actively recruiting Houston area youth ages 8-18 and adult volunteers to participate in athletic, educational and mentoring activities. The program uses recreational activities to help build relationships with the police department and youth. The programโ€™s goal is to reduce juvenile crime and violence through โ€œRelational Policing,โ€ which includes building trusting relationships among youth, law enforcement and the community.
