The “Hamilton” on Disney+ is a filmed version of the show, not a movie. It’s easy to call the version of “Hamilton” coming out on Disney+ a movie, but technically, it’s the stage version, filmed. An actual movie version of “Hamilton” will probably happen eventually, but this is a great way to really capture the magic of the stage version of the show. And because the people at Disney are incredibly smart, free trials of the streaming service have ended, so if you want to watch, you’re going to have to sign up.

When Hamilton first debuted on Broadway in 2015, it was an immediate hit. Everyone from theater critics to celebrities to politicians -- and yes, President Barack Obama -- quickly fell in love with the groundbreaking biomusical about one of the countrys Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton. My only real insight in writing the show was all of the problems and paradoxes and fights present at the founding that are still here, Miranda tells ET. The thing about Hamilton is because it brushes up against the founding of this country, it hits differently depending on where we are as a country, Miranda says. But after a smash run on Broadway -- temporarily halted by theater closures after the coronavirus outbreak -- the bio-musical is now headed to the screen with a new film on Disney+. As previously reported, the film is coming to Disney+ after initially being slated for a theatrical release in October 2021. At the 2020 Oscars in February, Miranda opened up to ET about bringing Hamilton to the big screen. Hamilton is available to stream July, 3 on Disney+.
