HOUSTON – The Memorial High School football program is a lot more confident this season. Their swagger might be coming from the Mustangs’ new head coach, Brooks Haack, who won a state championship at Katy High School in 2008 and was the offensive coordinator for Randle’s state title last season.
So what’s the first year been like for Coach Haack?
“Man, it’s been a true blessing, and it’s something like you always dream of as a head coach or when you’re stepping into that role,” said Haack. “I know, as a kid for so long I was dreaming about this day of becoming a head coach, and it’s just been amazing so far.”
“He’s put a change on this team, our offense got a lot better, our defense a lot better, so I feel like that change is gonna make us go real far,” said senior linebacker Isaac Richardson.
Coach Haack not only brought over his coaching principles and playbook to Memorial, but he also brought an aggressive identity to this program.
“We’re gonna hit you in the mouth every single play,” said senior linebacker John Kafka.
“We may not be running 4.4’s at every position and stuff like that, but if we can be physical and we can be a disciplined football team, then we’re gonna be in every football game that we play,” said Coach Haack. “When y’all cut loose and play free, man, that’s when we fire on all cylinders and big things happen.”
“In the past years, we might have been considered a little bit of a soft team, but think if you ask anyone this year, I bet they wouldn’t call us soft,” said Kafka.
The Mustangs continue their 6A Region III District 17 schedule with a showdown against Cypress Creek on Thursday night.
