UH commit Keisean Henderson shines in season debut

Star quarterback from Spring’s Legacy School of Sports Sciences breaks out in season opener

HOUSTON – Sometimes, all it takes is one game to show the country you are every bit the part of a five-star caliber high school football player.

Friday night, Keisean Henderson did just that — and then some —with six touchdowns in his season opener for The Legacy School of Sports Sciences. The school, based in Spring, is coached by Willis native and former Heisman Trophy runner-up Michael Bishop.

Yes, it’s that Michael Bishop, who is living out his dream by coaching high school football and building up the young men like Henderson in his Titans program.

“He’s a special player,” Bishop told KPRC 2 Sports Director Randy McIlvoy this summer while describing his star quarterback.

Henderson is indeed a special player with a skillset rarely seen and often compared to former Houston Madison, Texas Longhorn, and Tennessee Titan quarterback Vince Young.

Henderson caught the college scouts’ attention back in middle school, and they never stopped their pursuit of what quickly became a prized recruit. He began as a wide receiver but, upon entering high school and at Legacy, Henderson became a quarterback with a skill set that turned heads.

Now in his senior year, the growth has not stopped. Henderson’s recruitment is closed after he announced that he would become a Houston Cougar and play for Head Coach Willie Fritz.

A five-star Quarterback deciding he was staying home to play college football is rare in this day and age of college sports but UH was where he knew he needed to be.

“It felt like home, and playing for Coach Fritz and the staff was exciting to me. I can’t wait to get there.”

Henderson has set lofty goals for his senior season.

“I want to throw for six thousand yards,” he told McIlvoy after a summer workout with a big smile.

“We’ll see if we can get there,” added a smiling Coach Bishop.

Henderson put on a clinic against Second Baptist in the opener accounting for 423 yards and six touchdowns in the win. That’s just the start for one of the nation’s top quarterbacks.

“When I think of Keisean Henderson I see all the traits,” Bishop told KPRC 2. " He’s explosive, resilient, focused, determined, fearless, relentless and gritty."

Henderson has remained humble and puts the team ahead of his personal accolades and that is what makes him a special talent.

Coach Bishop is a veteran coach and Kansas State star who also spent time in the NFL and CFL. He said he is honored to have the chance to coach Henderson and continue to develop his game.

“His play on the field puts him in a category that some dream of being included in,” added Bishop. “More importantly he’s a great young man.”
