HOUSTON – The Houston Astros and Jeremy Peña were deep in contract discussions on a deal worth more than $105 million over 5 years, multiple league sources briefed on the discussions tell KPRC 2.
The Astros first approached Peña early in the season to start discussions, and the 27-year old was open to staying in Houston. Peña, who is in the midst of a career year, saw his price tag rise throughout the season. During negotiations, the Astros’ most recent offer exceeded $105 million, according to league sources.

Monday, Peña switched agencies to Boras Corp., hiring Scott Boras to oversee any extension negotiations or his eventual free agency.
Boras is well-known in the baseball world for taking top players to free agency, so that all 30 teams can bid on the player, versus just one. There have been exceptions in this process with the Astros, as Boras and Astros owner Jim Crane have worked together on two extensions for second baseman Jose Altuve, and starting pitcher Lance McCullers, Jr. The most recent extension for Altuve, a 5-year, $125 million pact was orchestrated by Altuve’s desire to stay in Houston, no matter what.
Peña, who is hitting a career high .326 with 11 home runs and a career high OPS of .874 has been among the best players in the American League in 2025, with this season’s numbers far exceeding the output of his previous three seasons. According to publicly available defensive metrics, Peña is playing much better defensively this season than in 2023 and 2024. In 2022, Peña became the first rookie shortstop to win a Gold Glove. That same year, Peña won the ALCS MVP and World Series MVP, as he helped lead the Astros to the 2022 Championship.
Peña does not become a free agent until after the 2027 season.
