HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating after a person was found dead inside a trash can at a small apartment complex Sunday morning.
Officers were called to the 3100 block of Anita Street around 12:13 a.m. after a caller reported hearing gunfire and seeing someone appear to move a body toward a trash can.
“The person who called us blocked their number, and we weren’t able to call them back. So officers got there, and we didn’t have anyone to talk to,” said Lt. Wilkens with the Houston Police Department. “But they (officers) did a great job. [They] started looking around the area of this mini apartment complex and found a dead body in a trash can that was turned over.”
Police said no one at the scene was able to provide additional details when officers arrived. Investigators could not immediately determine how the person died or whether the injuries involved gunfire, blunt-force trauma, or another cause.
Investigators also found blood trails leading from the parking lot to Apartment Unit 1. A man inside refused to come outside, prompting HPD’s Patrol Support Team to use breaching equipment to remove him from the unit.
“We did find some trails of blood that led us to an apartment. We were asking an individual to come out, which they refused. Some of the Patrol Support Team were able to get out there, use some breaching equipment to get him out,” Lt. Wilkens said.
Kenneth Harris, who lives in the neighborhood, said the violence in the area needs to be addressed: “Can’t get rid of it; you never know what’s going to happen next time you come around. You never know. It’s happening every other month, week, day. Something happens here all the time.”
Harris also expressed sympathy for the person who died and the person responsible. “I’m feeling real sad about the person who lost his life and the person who took his life. I feel for both of these people who did this crime. I feel pity for both of them, because it shouldn’t have happened.”
No suspects had been identified, though police say they have been questioning and interviewing people in the area. Investigators had not determined the cause of death.
