GALVESTON, Texas – At least five people are dead after a Mexican Navy Medical plane crashed into Galveston Bay on Monday, according to the Mexican Navy
Two people survived and one person is still missing.
Authorities say the plane crashed near the base of the causeway.
While the cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, dense fog could be seen in Galveston throughout the day.
Sky Decker was caught on camera jumping in the water to save a person from the crash.
“It’s the right thing to do,” said Decker.
Decker is a plane crash survivor himself.
“I was about 10 years old and I was in a crash and it really stuck with me," said Decker. “My dad was a pilot, but because of that crash, it really turned me away from flying."
Despite his own trauma, Decker didn’t hesitate to jump in the water to save someone who had gone through a similar experience.
“I don’t think really anything was going through to my mind other than just trying to help,” said Decker.
Another Galveston man, Oliver Wilson, offered his boat to officers so they could proceed with search and rescue efforts.
“They flagged us down. They were almost as confused as we were," said Wilson. “We loaded them up and started searching and found the plane."
The Galveston Airport Director tells KPRC 2 the Mexican Navy medical plane flew into Galveston about half a dozen times a year to treat burn victims at Shriners Children’s Hospital.
