After tornadoes ravage NW Harris County, officials roll out recovery resources for affected families

HOUSTON, Texas – Families in northwest Harris County are beginning the long cleanup process after severe storms, including several reports of isolated tornadoes, ripped through the Cypress and Spring areas on Monday, damaging more than 100 homes.

Despite the destruction, authorities say no injuries have been reported.

On Elk Bend Drive and Harmony Hill Road, power outages make it difficult to see the extent of the damage, but debris and downed trees line the neighborhood.

In daylight video from Monday, trees can be seen blocking streets as neighbors and volunteers work together to clear them.

Trampolines were tossed across yards and into the street, including one belonging to a resident named Cristy.

“In true Houstonian fashion, I ignored the alert,” she said. “I was walking out my door when I saw everything circling. We stopped, and then everything went still. It was really eerie.”

As cleanup begins, officials are sharing resources for families who need help:

  • 311: Call for debris pickup only.
  • Red Cross: For immediate shelter needs due to storm or property damage, call 1-800-733-2767.
  • 211: For all other non-debris, non-shelter needs, residents can call 2-1-1.
  • ISTAT Survey: Residents can report property damage by completing the Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool at bit.ly/tornadoistat. This helps emergency management identify the extent of storm impacts but does not replace insurance claims or guarantee assistance.

Cleanup is expected to take time, but for now, families say they’re grateful everyone made it through safely.
