HOUSTON – Congressman Al Green was joined by officials from FIEL to discuss an order from a federal judge to release a missing teenage boy from a detention center.

The incident happened on Oct. 4. The 15-year-old boy, who reportedly has autism, was with his mother while she was selling fruit. He asked to use the restroom, but his mother was distracted with a customer. When the mother turned back, the boy was gone.

A day later, officers with Houston Police Department picked up the boy, who claimed he was homeless and didn’t have family in the United States.

In the weeks since the incident, the boy has reportedly remained in custody. However, a federal judge ordered that the boy be reunited with his mother.

“I am grateful for the humanity the judge has displayed, as well as the efforts of Attorney Raed Gonzalez, and FIEL Houston Executive Director Cesar Espinosa, to reunite this family,” Congressman Green said in a statement.
