HOUSTON – Houston Humane Society is calling on the community to open their homes temporarily to pets in need this holiday season.
With hundreds of animals at Houston Humane looking for loving homes, the nonprofit hopes people will consider holiday fostering.
This means providing a temporary home for a dog or cat, giving them a break from shelter life for a few days or weeks.
“We have short-term foster opportunities,” said Bree Porter, Houston Humane Foster & Transport Manager. “Maybe you can only foster during the weekend, so pick up a dog or cat and keep them for two days. It gets them out of the shelter, they can decompress, dogs can go for walks, they can get those really good photos in the home, and we can gather more information about their personalities to help find forever families.”
Houston Humane supplies everything needed to foster, including food, a crate, and veterinary care if necessary. This makes it an ideal way to help a pet without the commitment of lifelong care.
“For some of these pets, they are with us for quite some time. So, getting them out of the shelter is so important,” Porter added.
