Nearly 878,000 families across the Greater Houston area and surrounding counties may not receive SNAP benefits in November.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — better known as SNAP — provides monthly benefits to help families afford groceries. That money comes from the USDA and because of the government shutdown continuing, benefits will stop for millions nationwide, including those hundreds of thousands right here locally.
How do we know this? Texas Health and Human Services tells KPRC 2, “SNAP benefits for November won’t be issued if the federal government shutdown continues past Oct. 27.”
Bottom line? Hundreds of thousands of Houston-area households, on top of unpaid federal workers, are facing empty shelves at home.
Here is how you can help:
KPRC 2 has partnered with community organizations across the Greater Houston area to collect non-perishable items benefitting the Houston Food Bank!
Here are the participating locations:
- 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
- Location 1: HCU McNair Hall: 7502 Fondren Rd, Houston, TX 77074.
- Entry is from Gates 2 or 3 off of Fondren or Beechnut.
- Location 2: HCU Bradshaw Fitness Center: 7731 Southwest Fwy, Houston, TX 77074.
- Entry is right off the feeder road, and the bin is at the main entry.
