It happened around 8:30 p.m. on Woodforest Boulevard near Makey Road when police said a Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) unit was driving to a call when the officer behind the wheel swerved to avoid a man standing in the roadway.

Moments later, investigators said the man opened fire, with one of the rounds hitting the patrol car’s rear license plate but did not penetrate the vehicle.

Inside the car was a uniformed female officer and a civilian clinician who partners with HPD’s DART unit. Neither of them was injured.

The officers stopped a short distance away and called for backup. A large response followed, including tactical units, K9 officers, and air support.
