“I was the kid who couldn’t stop talking to her neighbor in school! The teachers sent home so many notes that I needed to stop chatting so much. Fortunately for me, I didn’t listen to those teachers! That skill came in handy later in life!”
“I always loved school, so the first day was a big deal. Fresh school supplies & a new lunchbox! I also loved show and tell in elementary school. One day, our cat caught a little rabbit in our yard. The cat won; and he had dragged the poor rabbit’s head up on our back patio. I scooped the head into a Mason jar and put it in my school bag. At show & tell, I pulled it out to share with my class. Can you imagine poor Ms. Schutlz’ surprise? She didn’t scold me, but she may have cut my presentation a little short!”
“A flashback gem for you-- decked out in my pink bow and pink backpack, ready to rock kindergarten! 🎀 This ‘back-to-school’ season hits differently because my daughter will be headed kindergarten this year! She, too, is ready for the adventure ahead but it’s mom that’s having a hard time believing my baby is old enough to be at this juncture. Cue the happy tears."
“My dream of becoming a reporter started early — third grade, to be exact. I was chosen to be a “mini weather watcher” for the NBC station in Chicago. Every morning for a week, I’d call in the temperature from my hometown and give three shoutouts — usually to my teacher, a friend, and someone who gave me snacks. It was a small moment, but one that made a big impact. Not long after that, I started reading the school news after lunch — and from then on, I was hooked. I had amazing teachers who encouraged me, believed in me, and helped me see that I could turn this passion into something real. Now, years later, I get to live out that dream every day. I guess morning news really was in my blood."
“My memories of school growing up in Houston are so special — school helped me foster my love and passion for weather. I had the joy of attending The Kinkaid School, and all of my teachers supported me pursuing my interest in weather. Being a meteorologist in Houston has been my dream job since I was four years old, and I wouldn’t be here without the amazing and supportive teachers at Kinkaid. I still think back on my lower school science teacher, Ms. Sayuk, teaching us about the water cycle! In the fourth grade, I was first able to broadcast the weather on my school’s morning news show — “KLS-TV” — which solidified my desire to pursue becoming a broadcast meteorologist.”
“One of my favorite back-to-school memories is how my mom always made sure my hair looked picture-perfect—just like the girls on the perm boxes. She never failed to go the extra mile.”
“I attended a small Catholic school, Our Lady of Fatima in Galena Park. It wasn’t just a school—it was a family. At the heart of it all was our principal, Sister Martina. She was caring and understanding, yet firm and full of high expectations. Whether it was classwork, choir, or basketball, she pushed us to be our best. She believed in us, and that belief stayed with me. Sister Martina made a huge impact on my life. Her guidance and strength helped shape the person I am today."
“One of my favorite stories from Golfcrest Elementary involves our dog, Butch. We used to walk to school together, and he learned the route so well that one day I found him wandering the hallways during lunch. After a bit of a commotion, I got him outside. I wasn’t worried—he always knew how to find his way home. When my brother and I returned, Butch was waiting for us. I’d like to think he came looking for me but maybe he just wanted a bit of attention and an extra meal."
“As I child, I was notorious for “marching to the beat of my own drum,” AKA doing whatever I felt like doing. So, this is me on one of my first days of school in a swimsuit. You can notice the other students behind me in proper uniform, but I insisted on wearing a swimsuit, beaded anklet, and flip-flops. My teachers and mom also grew fatigued in fighting it, and now this is one of my several funny back-to-school memories, including one year that I wore a “Powerpuff Girls” costume and had everyone call me ‘Blossom‘."
Favorite Teacher: Mrs. Mallory, she was my librarian and took the time to recommend many book series that eventually went on to be classic favorites of mine.
