HOUSTON, Texas – Hey parents! Daniella Guzman here from KPRC 2. As the new school year kicks off, I want to share some important questions you should never ask your kids when picking them up or dropping them off, plus a few things you should never do.

These tips come from real family experiences and verified advice to help you support your kids without accidentally stressing them out.

Questions to NEVER Ask Your Kids

1. Never ask, “How was school?”

I know it sounds simple, but that question can feel like an interrogation or pressure to summarize their whole day. Instead, try asking about something specific, like “What was the best thing that happened at school today?” or “Did you learn anything new that surprised you?”

2. Never make grades the most important thing about school

Grades are important, but they aren’t everything. Avoid focusing only on the A’s and B’s. Celebrate effort, growth, and trying new things. Kids need to know their worth isn’t tied just to numbers.

Things to NEVER Do

3. Never miss Back to School Night

Don’t skip this! It’s your best chance to meet teachers, learn classroom routines, and understand what your child’s school will expect. Being actively involved makes a huge difference.

4. Never turn down extra learning support for your kiddos

If your child needs extra help or resources, say yes. Tutoring, after-school programs, and special supports are there to help your child thrive, not to label or shame.
