After finally snapping a five-game losing streak last night, the Houston Astros made a statement on Wednesday, taking down the Washington Nationals in dominant fashion.

Right-hander Ryan Gusto got the start at the mound for Houston, tossing 6.0 innings tallying five strikeouts while allowing four hits, one walk and one run. Hector Neris, Steven Okert and Luis Contreras each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

After the teams each scored an early run, Jose Altuve broke the game open in the bottom of the second inning, hitting a three-run homer into left field to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

Homers by Cooper Hummel and Yainer Diaz in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Astros more than enough insurance, making the score 9-1.

Altuve had a monster day, recording a hit in each of his four plate appearances, including a home run and three runs batted in.

The win lifts the ‘Stros to 62-47 on the season and clinches a series win ahead of Thursday’s MLB Trade Deadline.
