PEARLAND, Texas – Pearland and Brazoria County marked a historic milestone Thursday evening with their first-ever Juneteenth Gala, celebrating freedom and inclusion at the Pearland Recreational Center.
The Vision to Destiny Juneteenth Gala featured former politician Amanda Edwards as keynote speaker, along with an art gallery, scholarship presentations, and community celebrations highlighting the significance of the holiday.
“Pearland is all about celebrations, and especially community,” said Josh Lee, Director of Communications for the City of Pearland. “We are one of the most diverse communities in the Houston region.”
Organizer Eugene Howard emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the event. “It is the first time we’re having a Juneteenth Gala here in the city, here in the county, and it’s an exciting moment,” Howard said.
Historical significance meets modern celebration
The gala featured an educational art display chronicling African American history from 1619, when the first 20 Africans arrived on American shores. The exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of the journey leading to freedom and equality.
Howard explained the historical context of Juneteenth, noting it commemorates when General Granger arrived in Galveston to announce the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring all enslaved people free following President Abraham Lincoln’s decree.
Diversity and unity take center stage
Organizers emphasized the gala’s inclusive nature, welcoming attendees from all backgrounds. “You don’t have to be black, you don’t have to be white, Hispanic, South Asian. You can be any pigmentation, any culture, any religion,” Howard explained. “Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom.”
The event featured multiple components celebrating both achievement and community. A scholarship presentation honored a local high school student, while the art gallery showcased cultural heritage and historical significance.
Building a legacy
The inaugural gala represents the beginning of what organizers hope will become a lasting tradition. Howard envisions the celebration continuing for generations, establishing itself as a cornerstone event in Pearland’s community calendar.
