HOUSTON – KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with $2,500 scholarships in 2025. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.
Alief Early College High School senior Kamila Martinez is this week’s KPRC 2-American Furniture Warehouse Senior Scholarship winner. Alief Early College High School in Houston is part of the Alief Independent School District.
Martinez is president of her school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. In that role, she helps coordinate community service projects like toy drives and park cleanups. She also gives her time through the Alpha Active Knights program, where she has spent more than 100 hours planting trees, packing food for people in need and more.
Martinez mentors high school freshmen at her school through the No Knights Left Behind program to help younger students adjust to high school and increase their chances of success.
The standout student was also captain of the Alief Early College High School Cross Country team. She participates in races for charity like the Houston Half Marathon.
In addition to her time participating in activities at school and volunteering in her community, Martinez also works 20-30 hours per week to help support her family.
This fall, Martinez will attend the University of Houston to study Computer Science with the goal of working in the cybersecurity field.
