108 young animals, including 87 kittens, are waiting to be placed with foster families. Many of these kittens have either graduated from or are currently in the organization’s Neonatal Kitten Nursery, where they receive around-the-clock care until they’re old enough to start eating on their own.

“With more than a hundred young animals depending on us, we are asking our community to help bridge the gap by fostering,” said Dr. Roberta Westbrook, Chief Veterinarian and VP of Veterinary Medicine at the Houston SPCA. “Fostering saves lives. It gives vulnerable animals the chance to grow, heal, and thrive in a safe, loving environment.”

The need is especially urgent during spring and summer, also known as “kitten season,” when shelters across the country see a sharp rise in orphaned litters.

Becoming a foster is simple and can be done online. The Houston SPCA provides all necessary supplies, medical care, and training. Fosters just provide time, attention, and love, working around their own schedules. There’s even a dedicated Facebook group, Houston SPCA Fosters, for added support. Houston SPCA shared some tips on how to tell if you need to step in and help:

  • Mom is absent and has yet to return after several hours.
  • The babies are very young.
  • They have closed eyes, folded ears, and are not walking around freely.
  • The babies are injured, malnourished, or covered in ants/insects.
