HOUSTON – A respected former KPRC 2 photojournalist is recovering in the hospital after a serious head-on collision involving a suspected drunk driver—who had already been arrested for DWI just weeks earlier.
Cheri Pressley, known for her years of work behind the camera in Houston, was driving in a one-lane HOV section of the Gulf Freeway when her vehicle was struck by a wrong-way driver.
“I was going 60. I’m sure he was going at least that,” Pressley said. “So that’s 120 miles an hour at least.”
The crash left her with three breaks in her leg, including her femur. She remains hospitalized, undergoing treatment and recovery.
Suspect previously arrested for DWI
Authorities say the suspect, Edward Hernandez, 23, had been released from jail just weeks earlier on a $100 bond following a DWI arrest.
Despite that, court records show Hernandez was granted bond again after this latest crash—this time set at $25,000. With only 10% required to secure release, he walked free after posting $2,500.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office had requested a $50,000 bond in this case.
Concerns over bond decisions
Critics are questioning why Hernandez was released so easily, despite multiple offenses.
“What in the world is going on?” Crimestoppers of Houston Victim Advocate, Andy Kahan said.
“How many more people have to get hurt before someone says maybe we shouldn’t let this guy out so easily?” Kahan said.
The case has sparked renewed concerns over how repeat offenders are handled within the Harris County court system.
What’s next
Edward Hernandez faces two DWI charges and a felony charge of failure to stop and render aid. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 5.
