Scott Evan Shepple, 36, pled guilty Friday to the 3rd degree felony charge of assault/family violence by impeding breath. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison as part of a plea agreement. He must serve half his sentence before he can be eligible for parole, according to the Grimes County District Attorney’s Office.

“Scott Shepple has a repeat history of violence towards women,” said Grimes County Assistant District Attorney Tammy Thomas. “He has shown he is incapable of following the rules in or out of custody. Family violence cases are important to our entire team. The only appropriate punishment in this case was an extended stay in prison.”

What Happened?

Authorities say the crime happened on Aug. 22, 2024, when Grimes County deputies responded to a home in Iola.

A woman told deputies that Shepple, who was her boyfriend, had beaten and choked her before fleeing in a vehicle. She was able to provide deputies with a security camera video showing the assault.

Shepple was located on Dec. 4 in Iola and was interviewed about the alleged assault. Authorities say Shepple confessed to the assault and resisted arrest as he was being taken into custody following the interview.

He was indicted by a grand jury on Dec. 16.

Shepple’s escape and recapture

Shepple was taken to Cypress Creek Behavioral Hospital following a suicide attempt in his cell at the Grimes County Jail on Mar. 30.

The next day, Shepple was able to escape the facility, sparking a manhunt that lasted for 19 hours.

Authorities caught up to Shepple at a motel near 249 and the North Freeway the next day where he was recaptured.

Two other men, Michael Garrett and Carl Banks, were also taken into custody and charged with hindering apprehension, but the latter was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.
