Lee Gilley facing capital murder charges in pregnant wife’s death in The Heights

Husband claims wife’s overdose before autopsy reveals strangulation

A Houston man has been indicted for capital murder in the 2024 death of his pregnant wife, with a $1 million bond set.

Lee Mongerson Gilley, 38, is facing charges after his wife, Christa Gilley, 38, was found dead in their home on Oct. 7, 2024.

What happened?

Officers were called to the Gilley home on Allston Street in The Heights in response to a reported suicide. Lee told police that he found Christa unresponsive and attempted CPR. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Initially, Lee claimed that his wife had overdosed, but an autopsy revealed a different story.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled Christa’s death a homicide caused by “compression of the neck,” consistent with strangulation. The autopsy also revealed that Christa was about eight weeks pregnant at the time of her death.

On Tuesday, a grand jury indicted Lee Gilley on charges of capital murder that included the deaths of both Christa and their unborn child.
