Cy-Fair High School senior Nicholas Oliver shines in Marching Band, wants to help others living with blindness

Oliver is the eighth recipient of the KPRC 2-American Furniture Warehouse Senior Scholarship from the Class of 2025

HOUSTON – KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with $2,500 scholarships in 2025. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.

Nicholas Oliver, a senior at Cy-Fair High School, is the eighth recipient of the KPRC 2-American Furniture Warehouse Senior Scholarship from the Class of 2025.

A standout musician and dedicated community volunteer, Oliver revealed to KPRC 2 in his scholarship nomination essay, “I have been completely blind since birth, but as you can see this has not limited my ability to succeed for my own ambitions as well as helping others.”

An accomplished pianist with more than 13 years of experience, Oliver was recognized by the National Guild of Piano Teachers with the Paderewski award, which is presented to musicians who memorize and master ten pieces of music and demonstrate strong musicianship.

He plays the keyboard and the trumpet for Cy-Fair High School’s Marching Band and indoor drumline. See how Oliver’s teammates assist him on the field in this video produced by Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.

Oliver has racked up dozens of hours volunteering through the Young Men’s Service League as well as community service through his school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. He has also volunteered for the National Federation of the Blind.

After graduation, Oliver plans to attend the Colorado School for the Blind before transitioning to a four-year university to study Computer Science. Oliver told KPRC 2 he hopes to create websites that are more accessible for the visually impaired.
