How Houston plans to use $2.5 million grants to combat homelessness

The state of Homelessness and its impact to Houston-area businesses

HOUSTON – As part of Houston Mayor John Whitmire’s commitment to combat homelessness, there are big plans in store for several grants equating to roughly $2.5 million that, if approved by council members, could help facilitate these efforts.

Some of the funds, for example, could be used to help prevent families of domestic violence from experiencing homelessness as well as maintain the Homeless Service Programs to prevent youths from becoming unhoused.

There is also a proposal to begin an “End Street Homelessness Fund,” which would allow the City to take the grant money from various agencies and nonprofits to better facilitate these efforts.

Here’s a list of some of the Agenda Items that will be presented before Houston City Council. KPRC 2′s Rilwan Balogun will also be getting a closer look at these agenda items and share them in an updated report live on the air.

Agenda Item #26 - Covenant House Texas

$341,541 in grants will go towards case management, shelter, and essential services to 80 young adults ages 18-24.

Agenda Item #25 - Search Homeless Services

$376,669 in grant funds for “Rapid Re-housing Case Management services” to 100 homeless households placed in permanent housing through The Way Home.  The program was selected by the city’s Homeless Services Program.

Agenda Item #24 - Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston

$264,705 in additional grants to help 80 households at-risk of experiencing homelessness. This will go through the Rapid Rehousing Case Management System.

Agenda Item #23 - The Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County

$153,335 in grants from two funds to maintain the Homeless Management Information System.

Agenda Item #22 - Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council

$944,657.15 in grants to help nonprofits serve a minimum of 288 additional households who are homeless or at-risk of being homeless that are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or human trafficking.

Agenda Item #21 - The Salvation Army

$334,689.86 in grants for homeless program services including diversion, homelessness prevention, and emergency shelter for a minimum of 775 additional households who are experiencing homelessness or are at-risk for immediate homelessness.

Agenda Item #20 - Harris County Housing and Community Development Department

$143,750 in grants to help with the case management of 25 at-rick of homelessness households.

Agenda Item #19 - End Street Homelessness Fund

This is a new fund that will allow the city to use money from various sources like City/County/Federal/State organizations.
