Shortly after being named a person of interest, Laundrie too was reported missing. When Petito’s remains were discovered in Wyoming, a nationwide manhunt for Laundrie ensued. A month after Petito’s remains were first discovered, Laundrie’s body was found, along with a suicide note confessing to her killing.

The case attracted national headlines and raised conversations around the topic of domestic violence. These discussions were amplified after footage emerged showing an officer pulling over the couple’s van after a passerby reported seeing Laundrie “slapping” Petito, but no arrests were made.
