Unprecedented snowfall of up to 5 inches hits Beaumont as winter storm moves through

BEAUMONT, Texas – A rare and powerful winter storm significantly impacted the I-10 corridor in Beaumont bringing unprecedented snowfall and hazardous conditions to the region. The National Weather Service issued the first-ever blizzard warning for parts of the Gulf Coast, including Beaumont, as a winter storm swept through the area.

Snowfall and Weather Conditions

Beaumont experienced substantial snowfall, with accumulations reaching up to five inches. This level of snowfall is unprecedented for the region, leading to treacherous travel conditions along the I-10 corridor. The Texas Department of Transportation has been actively conducting snow removal operations to keep the interstate passable.

I-10 Traffic and Transport

Surprisingly, I-10 has stayed open and operational thanks for The Texas Department of Transportation. Keeping the highway operational was a major priority, as TxDOT says the stretch of interstate that makes up the I-10 corridor is one of it’s busiest parts of the entire Texas Transportation System for transporting goods and services in Texas.

Traffic Incidents and Advisories

The severe weather has led to multiple traffic incidents. The Beaumont Police Department reported a major crash on the northbound I-10 Service Road north of College Street, advising residents to avoid the area. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution or avoid travel altogether until conditions improve.

Infrastructure Impact

The winter storm caused a water main break at Franklin and Park in Beaumont, further complicating the situation for residents. City officials are working diligently to address infrastructure issues arising from the extreme weather.

Safety Measures and Recommendations

Residents in Beaumont and surrounding areas are advised to:

  • Stay Informed: Keep up with local news and weather updates for the latest information.
  • Limit Travel: Avoid unnecessary travel to reduce the risk of accidents and allow emergency services to operate effectively.
  • Prepare for Power Outages: With increasing power outages affecting over 33,000 utility customers in the region, ensure you have necessary supplies and a plan in place.
  • Protect Against Cold: With dangerously low temperatures and wind chills expected, dress in layers and minimize exposure to the cold.

This historic winter storm serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness and caution during extreme weather events. Residents are encouraged to follow official guidance and prioritize safety as the community navigates these challenging conditions.
