Iris Vences shines for service and leadership at Spring Early College Academy

KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse recognize Vences with Senior Scholarship

HOUSTON – KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with $2,500 scholarships in 2025. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.

Spring Early College Academy senior Iris Vences is the second KPRC 2 Senior Scholarship recipient from the Class of 2025. Spring Early College Academy, part of the Spring Independent School District, is located on the North Harris campus of Lone Star College.

Vences will be recognized at graduation with a “Dedicated Service Honor” for her volunteer efforts in support of student recruitment and campus events. She serves on the Spring ISD Superintendent’s Advisory Council, Alpha Ambassadors and is Senior Class President.

Having a hearing disability diagnosed in the third grade was a turning point for Vences, who persevered in finding ways to communicate with others. She is a skilled lip reader and is learning American Sign Language. Vences tells KPRC 2 that she learned to advocate for herself and wants to become a role model for others diagnosed as Hard-of-Hearing (HOH).

Vences plans to study English Literature with the goal of teaching at the college level as a professor. While her college plans are being finalized, Vences is seriously considering attending The University of Texas.
