HOUSTON – Alright, Houston, buckle up. We’re about to experience that part of winter we usually relish - and sometimes even laugh at - for our friends and family up north.
STAY WEATHER AWARE: A historic winter snowstorm is about to hit Houston, be prepared

This winter storm is bringing the works: rain, sleet, ice, and several inches of snow. That means if your vehicle is parked outside, it will likely have a layer of ice on the windshield.
PRO TIP: Raise your windshield wipers when you park to avoid them from freezing to the windshield.
If you’ve made it to this article, odds are you don’t have an ice scraper. I mean, why would you? You’re in Texas.
That’s OK. If you don’t have an ice scraper handy, there are some other ways to get that ice off your windshield.
1. Use a homemade de-icing solution
A simple and effective way to tackle ice is by making your own de-icing solution.
Mix two parts rubbing alcohol with one part water in a spray bottle.
Add a few drops of dish soap to help the solution spread evenly.
Spray it generously on the icy windshield, and watch the ice melt away.
The alcohol’s low freezing point helps break down the ice quickly.
Be cautious about getting this solution on paint or other sensitive surfaces.
2. Turn on your car’s defroster
While it might seem obvious, turning on your car’s defroster is a great way to start melting the ice.
Set the defroster to its highest setting and let it run for a few minutes.
The warm air will gradually soften the ice, making it easier to remove.
Combine this method with other techniques for faster results.
3. Use a plastic card
If you’re in a pinch, a sturdy plastic card, like an old credit card or a membership card, can be used to scrape off the ice.
Hold the card at a slight angle and gently push it under the ice to lift it away from the glass.
Be careful not to apply too much pressure to avoid scratching the windshield.
4. Try a spatula or a similar kitchen tool
A rubber or silicone spatula from your kitchen can serve as a makeshift ice scraper.
These tools are gentle on glass and can help remove ice without causing damage.
Just be sure to use a spatula with a flat edge for the best results.
Avoid using a metal kitchen utensil, as they could damage your windshield or paint.
5. Cover your windshield overnight
Prevention is often the best solution.
If you know a frost is coming, cover your windshield with a tarp, blanket, or even a large towel the night before.
This will prevent ice from forming directly on the glass, saving you time and effort in the morning.
6. Use warm water cautiously
In a desperate situation, you might consider using warm water to melt the ice.
However, be cautious with this method.
Use lukewarm water, not hot, to avoid cracking the glass due to sudden temperature changes.
Pour the water slowly and evenly across the windshield to help the ice melt.
PRO TIP: This would be my absolute last resort option. While it would work, I would rather sit and wait for my vehicle to warm up and defrost before trying this method.
7. Invest in a windshield cover
For a more permanent solution, consider investing in a windshield cover designed to prevent ice buildup.
These covers are easy to use and can save you time on those cold winter mornings.
By using these tips, you can effectively de-ice your windshield without an ice scraper.
Remember to always prioritize safety and avoid using any sharp or metal objects that could damage your vehicle’s glass.
