Warrant shows man accused of killing deputy was wanted for shooting man in Iowa Colony

IOWA COLONY, Texas – KPRC 2 obtained the warrant Brazoria County Deputy Jesus Vargas was serving before the suspect shot and killed him in a Dollar Tree parking lot Wednesday.

The shooting happened in the Dollar Tree parking lot off Stella Link Road on Wednesday. According to the warrant, the shooter, Robert Lee Davis III, was wanted for a shooting at a man at a 7-Eleven store in Iowa Colony.

Witnesses told KPRC 2 reporter Corley Peel that Davis was a frequent customer at the 7-Eleven.

A probable cause affidavit shows the shooting happened in October. A man claimed Davis stole his truck and confronted him about near the front of the store.

The man asked Davis, “Why did you steal my truck?”

Davis responded saying “It wasn’t working anyway. What are you going to do about it?”

Records show Davis pulled out a gun.

The man asked, “Are you really going to do this right here?”

Davis responded saying “Yeah, I don’t give a f***.”

Davis then shot the man. Witnesses told police Davis walked over to the gas pumps then got into a car with a woman and drove off.

A grand jury indicted Davis in December for the aggravated assault charge. At the time, detectives learned Davis was wanted out of Galveston for theft and Fulton County, Georgia for weapon offenses.
