Comedian and Alief’s own Mo Amer, along with Netflix, dropped the second season’s trailer on Wednesday, showing where the series picks up after its cliffhanger of an ending just three years ago.

The 2-minute trailer shows Amer’s character “Mo Najjar” having to soul-search once again after he finds himself stuck in Mexico. It’s unclear how he gets back home in Houston, but shows him having to navigate a new life after learning his wife has left him. On top of that, he has been denied citizenship and is apparently deported after illegally crossing the border.

Like Amer, his character “Mo Najjar” is ethnically Palestinian, but was born in Kuwait and raised in Houston. He also happens to speak fluent Spanish and be Muslim.

By using Houston as the series’ backdrop, Amer was able to highlight the complexity of religion and culture in and of themselves, where subtle nuances are meant to create division. Instead, Amer plays on them in an expressive but empathetic way to give viewers a piece of something they might be able to relate to e.g., loneliness, purpose, and identity.

Mo will return to Netflix for its Season 2 premiere on January 30, 2025.
