HOUSTON – KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse surprised 20 deserving high school seniors during the school year with $2,500 scholarships. This bonus surprise raises that total to 21 KPRC 2 Senior Scholarships awarded to the Class of 2024. All students selected for scholarships were nominated by their high schools.
Congratulations to Bethzy Benitez, a recent graduate of Cesar E. Chavez High School in the Houston Independent School District. She was surprised with a bonus $2,500 scholarship at the American Furniture Warehouse store in Katy, where she thought she was going for an interview as a scholarship finalist. The team from American Furniture Warehouse gathered in their warehouse to surprise Benitez with confetti poppers and lots of cheering.
Benitez played varsity soccer and ran cross country while in high school. She was a member of the Spanish Honor Society and volunteered at health clinics through HOSA, an extracurricular organization of future health professionals. She also volunteers through her church. Benitez has already earned her Pharmacy Technician certification.
In her scholarship nomination essay, Benitez told KPRC 2, “After participating and volunteering in a lot of events related in the medical field, I realized that I enjoy helping people. It became my passion and it’s something that I would like to do in the future.” Benitez plans to pursue a career in nursing.
