The Nickel Sandwich Grill: Story behind Fifth Ward staple of more than two decades

HOUSTON – Nestled in the heart of Fifth Ward, The Nickel Sandwich Grill has been serving up mouthwatering meals for nearly 24 years. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, loyal customers, and flavorful menu, the Black-owned business has become more than just a restaurant, it’s a community staple.

Owner Craig Presley, a Fifth Ward native, always dreamed of opening a restaurant in his hometown

“When I opened the door, I had $375.94, so I had to make it,” Presley recalled.

Presley says the name “Nickel” comes from the area’s deep-rooted history.

“You know they got Third Ward, Fourth Ward, and most people when they say ‘the ward,’ they’re talking about Fifth Ward—so they shortened it to ‘The Nickel,’” Presley explained.

What started as a simple sandwich shop quickly expanded into a full menu featuring burgers, po’ boys, fried fish, brisket, and more. One of the secrets to his success? Slow-cooked meats packed with flavor.

“And we let it go until about 12 hours,” Presley said while preparing a brisket.

For customers like Arthur and Terrance, stopping by The Nickel isn’t just about grabbing a bite to eat—it’s a tradition.

“If you come here and don’t come here, you missed it. This is the spot here,” Arthur said.

Some, like Terrance, don’t just order for themselves.

“I’m getting the shrimp Po’ Boy and a Nickel Burger with some boudin balls… It’s not just me I’m feeding,” he said. “Everybody loves the food, so I have to take care of everybody.”

Longtime employees also say The Nickel is more than just a job—it’s family. Patricia Dunn has worked at the eatery since day one and says Presley’s leadership makes the restaurant special.

“Craig! He’s a comedian,” Dunn said. “It’s easygoing, really simple. Everyone is like family. There’s no stranger—you come once, you’re gonna come back.”

Presley’s son, Tolivar Presley, is already following in his father’s footsteps, working alongside him to keep the restaurant’s legacy alive.

“It means a lot. He taught me a lot, so I’m trying to catch on to what he put in motion,” Tolivar said.

To mark nearly a quarter-century in business, Presley is planning a big celebration this April.

If you’re looking to try The Nickel Sandwich Grill, they’re open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Stop by Lyons Avenue and Lockwood Drive and see for yourself why this Fifth Ward gem continues to bring people together—one plate at a time.
