Believe in Dog training shares helpful tips to keep your dogs safe this holiday season

HOUSTON – The holidays can get a little ruff — but the puppy pros at Believe in Dog training in The Heights are here to help your four-legged friends stay safe, calm, and merry all season long!

From glittering trees to tasty treats, the holidays can be full of temptation for our pups, which is the why we are sharing some of their best tips for keeping dogs happy and safe through all the festive fun.

You know your dog better than anyone. Do they get anxious around kids or strangers? Will they run out a door that’s left open? Will they eat food from a kid’s hand?

If you think your dog may do anything that will put them in danger, frustrate or embarrass you - then it’s time to prepare now.

- Set your dog up for success and use temporary management tools: Baby Gates, Playpens, Hands Free Belt Leashes, Barriers around the Christmas tree, front door, stairs, etc.

- Provide a Zen Den: Holidays can be noisy and feel chaotic. Make sure your dog has a quiet, cozy spot where they can relax away from the commotion.

- Provide Exercise and mental stimulation beforehand: Long sniffy walks are the best! Puzzles and games are great as well.

- Toxic Foods and Plants: Classic holiday treats like chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, and goodies with xylitol are toxic to dogs. Favorites like poinsettias, holly, mistletoe, and lilies can be dangerous to dogs if nibbled on.

- Have Emergency Contacts Ready: Make sure you know how to reach your vet and the nearest animal emergency clinic in case of an accident. Also double-check that your dog’s tags and microchip details are current, just in case they get out amid the holiday bustle.
