Meet the stars of ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ at TUTS

A Broadway favorite lands at the Hobby Center

HOUSTON – The hysterical and heartfelt musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is playing at the Hobby Center now through Nov. 2.

Theatre Under the Stars brings a lively, family-friendly production that mixes sharp comedy, catchy songs and a surprising amount of heart.

Local audiences will recognize familiar faces and rising talent as the company brings the competition to life.

Inside rehearsals, music and audience fun

Actors Kevin Cahoon and Mark Ivy join Houston Life to talk rehearsals, choreography and the music that keeps the show humming.

What makes this production unique is how it folds the audience into the action — volunteers join the staged “spell-off,” making each performance unpredictably delightful.

Cahoon and Ivy share behind-the-scenes stories about timing, improv and creating a safe, light-hearted space where anything can happen.

From TUTS’ Humphreys School to the main stage

Both performers credit their time at TUTS’ Humphreys School of Musical Theatre for shaping their careers. They talk about training, mentorship and the practical skills that prepared them for professional work across stage and screen. Their experience highlights how local arts education continues to fuel Houston’s creative community.
