HOUSTON – Since 1979, OCA–Greater Houston (Organization of Community Advocates) has empowered the Asian American and Pacific Islander community through advocacy, education, and cultural programs. The volunteer-driven nonprofit continues to champion representation and creativity across Houston and this season, it’s doing just that through the Starry Nite Arts Festival.
Running from September through November, this vibrant series of community events celebrates Asian culture, art, and storytelling. From live performances to interactive workshops, the festival celebrates local talent and shares traditions with the city.

Watch the interview in the video above featuring Thai Nguyen and Monique Truong, first-time authors. They co-wrote “Mai’s Áo Dài,” a children’s picture book about embracing cultural pride and family traditions. The story follows a young girl learning the meaning behind her Vietnamese dress, the áo dài (long dress).
Nguyen, a California-based fashion designer known for dressing stars like Jennifer Lopez and Sandra Oh, draws inspiration from his Vietnamese roots and love of the áo dài. Truong, an award-winning novelist and proud Houston alum, brings emotional depth and storytelling brilliance to the collaboration.
And the celebration doesn’t stop there. Local musician Lela Dang brings her energy to the Houston Life studio with her original song “Life.” Born in Cleveland, Ohio, with Serbian and Vietnamese roots, Dang moved to Houston at age seven and began her entertainment journey as a fashion model before stepping into music.
The festival’s mission to uplift Asian voices continues to shine in Houston. For more information about OCA-Greater Houston and Starry Nite Arts Festival’s upcoming events, visit www.ocahouston.org.
