Houston, Texas – Detroit native Mateen Stewart is bringing his sharp, animated brand of comedy to Houston for only the second time in his career and this time, he’s promising laughs, a little provocation, and maybe even a stop for some Texas barbecue.
Now based in Pasadena, California, Stewart studied theater before moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting. But when his parents bought him a comedy class as a birthday gift, his late mother gave him the push he needed: “I don’t think of you as being funny, but if you think you can do it, I know you can.” That encouragement sparked a career that has now spanned 13 years of standup.
Stewart’s comedy style blends observational humor with personal twists—playful, provocative, and always delivered with his expressive stage presence. His influences include the late Patrice O’Neal, a comic whose legacy still resonates online and whose work continues to inspire Stewart’s approach to comedy.
Over the years, Stewart has built a resume in Los Angeles that includes projects with Ben Stiller on Funny or Die, Ken Marino, and even Jimmy Kimmel. Off stage, he’s a devoted husband to Erica and father to their daughter, Jayme (named after his late mother) who will celebrate her fourth birthday this September.
Fans can catch him headlining at Punchline Comedy in downtown Houston tonight at 7:30 p.m. at 1204 Caroline Street.
And if you can’t make it in person, Stewart’s upcoming standup special, “Bigger Doors,” premieres September 3, 2025, on YouTube.
