HOUSTON – Houston’s longest running opera company, Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston, is back with a summer production of “Iolanthe.”
Alyssa Weathersby, Keith Chambers and Wes Landry stop by studio B to chat about bringing this beloved classic to the stage.
“Iolanthe” is described as a whimsical, satirical operetta - blending fantasy, pointed social commentary, and romance.
The operetta is about the return of the fairy named Iolanthe who was exiled for marrying a mortal.
Iolanthe’s son, Strephon-half-fairy, half-human-loves Phyllis, a ward of the Lord Chancellor, who is also his romantic rival.
Chaos ensues when the fairies interfere in British politics, elevating Strephon to Parliament and upending tradition.
“Iolanthe” runs July 19 through July 27 at Zilkha Hall at Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.
Tickets start at $27.
