Years of pain, one lasting solution: How one woman transformed her smile

HOUSTON – Phyllis Sikes was just two years old when she had her first oral surgery. With two autoimmune diseases, Lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome, Sikes says she has had regular procedures for as long as she can remember.

“I’ve had more oral surgeries than I could possibly count,” said Sikes about her lifelong struggle with dental issues.

“It was constant changes in my mouth, constant uncertainty,” said Sikes, who was also dealing with bone loss in her jaw.

Sjogren’s syndrome causes dry mouth, which can cause teeth to decay much faster.

“Thankfully Phyllis came in early on before the bone had deteriorated too much,” said Texas Dental Implant Center’s Dr. Michel Azer, who urges patients to always get a second opinion to ensure they’re getting the best value and best care.

Dr. Azer says he regularly sees patients who have been told traditional implants won’t work for them because advanced bone loss means there’s no structure to support implants. His One Arch Procedure has helped patients achieve a bright, healthy smile even if they have been told there are no other options because of extreme bone loss.

“I definitely was looking for a more permanent solution when I came to Dr. Azer,” said Phyllis Sikes, who is now enjoying a beautiful new smile that has given her a new level of confidence and the ability to enjoy the foods she loves.
