New chapter for Tom Llamas: Now leading NBC Nightly News

HOUSTON – He has spent decades covering some of the biggest stories in the world, and now journalist Tom Llamas has stepped into the role of anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News.

Taking over for Lester Holt has extra meaning for Llamas, who was Holt’s production assistant more than 20 years ago at MSNBC.

Llamas, who is the first Latino anchor of Nightly News, grew up in Miami with immigrant parents who fled Cuba for political reasons.

“To come to this country, not have anything and then your son can be the anchor of Nightly News -- to me that’s the American dream,” said Llamas.
