Immersive Art and Science Collide in Houston’s MOTH Project LIVE

“A gentle reminder of the beauty and need for bio and cultural diversity in our lives and ecosystems”

In a unique fusion of art, science, and music, the MOTH Project LIVE is set to captivate audiences with its one-night-only performance at Discovery Green. This innovative event, featuring Grammy-nominated producer Peter Kiesewalter and Texas-born violinist Whitney La Grange, promises an immersive experience that blends beautiful art visuals, light, sound, and science in a way never seen before.

The inspiration for the MOTH Project LIVE traces back to the summer of 2020, during the pandemic lockdown. Peter Kiesewalter , while quarantining with his family in a cottage in Canada, observed moths drawn to the campfire light. This sparked a curiosity about the behavior of moths and their significance in the ecosystem.

“Why do they go to the light?” Peter pondered, leading to a deeper exploration of these creatures and their role as the world’s most efficient pollinators.

The performance aims to connect audiences with nature, leaving them with a sense of wonderment for the natural world.

“We want the audience to feel very much connected to nature,” said Whitney La Grange.

The show incorporates slow-motion videos of moths in flight, projected onto a large screen, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle.

The MOTH Project LIVE is not just an artistic endeavor but also a call to action. Scientists, particularly climate scientists, have expressed gratitude for the project, as it helps raise awareness about environmental issues in an engaging way.

“Scientists are looking to artists now to help spread the word in an entertaining way,” Kiesewalter explained.

The event is free to the community, offering an opportunity for everyone to experience this unique blend of art and science. The performance will take place on Saturday, February 15, at 7:30 PM at The Grove located in Discovery Green. Attendees will also have the chance to explore the ATLAS exhibit by artist Jen Lewin, which complements the MOTH Project LIVE with its own artistic interpretation of nature.
