A sweet treat for Valentine’s Day: How to create a heart-shaped layered macaron cake ♥️♥️🍰

HOUSTON – It’s a twist on a classic French dessert -- macaron!

Baker Asma Gowher from Trifles Gourmet Desserts last appeared on the show in February 2024, showcasing a collection of Valentine’s treats. She’s back this year, ahead of Valentine’s Day, with a delightful recipe elevating a macaron into a cake.

To create this delicious dessert, you will need three heart-shaped macaron shells, raspberry gel, and buttercream.

  • According to Gowher, the macaron shells are made from egg white, powdered sugar, sugar, and almond flour - making it gluten-free!
  • Mix five egg whites, 1.5 cups of sugar, and 1 pound of butter to make the buttercream.
  • While Gowher used raspberry gel for the filling in the show, you can substitute it with raspberry jam.

Once you have gathered the ingredients, follow these steps to layer the cake:

  1. Place a heart-shaped macaron shell on a place or baking sheet.
  2. Pipe the edge of the heart shell with buttercream.
  3. Fill the middle with raspberry gel (this is where your coloring inside-the-lines skills kick in).
  4. Place the second heart shell and repeat the process.
  5. After layering the second heart, place the third heart (top layer) and only pipe the edge.
  6. Feel free to decorate the middle with more buttercream, e.g., write love with buttercream.

After Gowher taught how to make a macaron cake, she challenged the hosts to see who could assemble it the fastest. See who made it better in the video above.

Try your hand at baking a macaron.
