Houston’s pro volleyball scene shines with Olympic talent

Houston is home to a professional volleyball team that competes in the League of Volleyball (LOVB). This team features world-class athletes, including Olympic gold medalists Micah Hancock and Jordan Thompson. This team brings international-caliber volleyball to the city, allowing fans to witness top-tier competition in their backyard.

Pronounced “love,” the LOVB league is designed to bridge the gap between youth and professional volleyball, providing a platform for players to showcase their skills. With six teams participating, the league hosts “LOVB Weekends,” where multiple teams compete in the same city, drawing fans to watch high-quality volleyball matches.

Micah Hancock, originally from Oklahoma, and Jordan Thompson, who has played in Italy and Turkey, both highlight the significance of having a professional volleyball league in the U.S. Previously, aspiring players had to go overseas to pursue their careers. Now, with LOVB, players have more opportunities to thrive domestically.

Coach Massimo Barbolini, a seasoned professional with a wealth of experience in high-level volleyball, leads the Houston team. He was on the coaching staff for the Italian team who won gold at the Paris Olympics. His expertise is invaluable to Houston’s LOVB team, especially for players transitioning from college to professional volleyball.

Houston Life’s Melanie Camp got some tips on how to serve from Olympic Champion players Micah Hancock and Jordan Thompson. Watch the video here:

The presence of such a team in Houston inspires young athletes. Micah Hancock notes that having professional players to look up to and learn from is a resource she didn’t have growing up. Her journey from a third-grade dream of becoming a professional volleyball player to achieving Olympic success is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion.

Jordan Thompson shares the unique experience of playing in the Olympics, emphasizing the sense of representing the team and the communities that supported her journey. “The Olympics are a celebration of the hard work and dedication of athletes and their supporters,” she said.

With the season underway, Houston’s pro volleyball team is set to captivate audiences with their talent and dedication. As they compete across the country and return to Houston at the end of January, fans can support these incredible athletes and witness the growth of volleyball in the city.
